We are very pleased to share the inspiring journey of Gabriella Ridley, Head of FS2 at Horizon English School, Dubai, and Rachel Day, Primary Teacher at Horizon International School, also in Dubai, who recently visited the Sparkle Foundation in Malawi. Cognita Middle East proudly partner with the Sparkle Foundation, a charity committed to driving positive change through the delivery of sustainable and replicable best practice community models in Malawi.

We recently had the privilege of visiting the Sparkle Foundation in Malawi, focusing on enhancing early literacy through innovative ‘Story Sacks’. These multisensory bags, containing storybooks with related props and activities, proved highly effective for both teachers and students.

The outcomes were remarkable. Teachers learned to plan and deliver literacy lessons using the Story Sack concept, integrating a cross-curricular approach favored in Early Years education. Over the week, we witnessed teachers gain confidence and observed rapid progress in their literacy teaching skills. The children, in turn, embraced new vocabulary, engaged in mark-making and writing, role-played stories, and most importantly, exhibited genuine delight in their learning.

What struck us most was the mutual exchange of knowledge. The passion, enthusiasm, and thirst for knowledge from the Sparkle teachers were palpable. This experience was not just about us imparting knowledge but also about learning and being inspired in return. The incredible resilience of the Sparkle children offers an invaluable example for our students, enriching their holistic education and illustrating the importance of global impact.

Volunteering in Malawi with the Sparkle Foundation was transformative. It wasn’t just about lending a helping hand; it was about immersing ourselves in a vastly different community and culture. Witnessing the dedication of Sparkle teachers and the challenges they face ignited a passion within us to make a meaningful difference.

Supporting the teachers in developing their skills and confidence was one of the most rewarding aspects of our trip. Through training and one-on-one mentoring sessions, we enhanced their teaching techniques and classroom management strategies. Collaborating to create a relevant and engaging early years curriculum was essential in providing children with a solid educational foundation.

This volunteer trip underscored the significance of global and social action as integral components of holistic education. It reminded us that education extends beyond textbooks and classrooms; it encompasses empathy, cultural understanding, and a commitment to effecting positive change. By empowering teachers and enriching educational experiences, we invest in Malawi’s future and contribute to a more equitable and interconnected global society.
