Centre of Excellence for Akeley’s Expanding Sixth Form

Written by: Akeley Wood School

In response to record numbers, we are delighted to announce the opening of our new state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre for September 2013. The new facilities will be based in the beautiful Stable Hall and will comprise a bespoke-conversion which, while maintaining all the character and charm of the existing listed building, will also include a modern careers centre, seminar rooms for project work and tutorial sessions, Wi-Fi equipped independent study rooms, social and recreation areas over two floors and a purpose built kitchen.

Our vision for the new Sixth Form is an ambitious one – a centre of excellence to unlock potential and provide our students with the very best education and life skills that will enable them to achieve their ambitions through university and into the work place beyond. The opening of the new and vibrant Sixth Form centre, which complements the newly completed Jubilee House, will coincide with the launch of our new Virtual Learning Environment and heralds a very exciting new chapter in the life of the school.

Over the past 4 years, Akeley Wood School has benefited hugely from the investment from The Cognita Group of Schools. It has seen new structures, internal improvements and extensive renovations taking shape across all three of its sites – from Food Technology suites, specialist facilities for Music Tech, Science, ICT and Art, to an Astroturf and Sports Hall erected on each of the three sites.

To complement these exceptional new improvements, Akeley Wood has also benefited from two outstanding Ofsted Inspections. The Senior School received the highest possible accolade, being judged as ‘Outstanding’ across all seven criteria, whilst the Junior School, inspected in September 2011, was awarded ‘Outstanding’ for its curriculum and pastoral care.

Quote from the Headmaster

“The new Sixth Form Centre is a dream come true, the culmination of Akeley’s ambitious post-millennium development.” Dr Jeremy Grundy, Headmaster

Quote from the Head of Sixth Form

“It is a tremendous privilege to be given the responsibility of leading the Sixth Form at Akeley Wood into the next phase of its development and I am absolutely relishing the prospect. Our Sixth Form has always combined strong academic achievement with the very best pastoral care: the welfare, happiness and success of our pupils always has been, and always will be, our top priority” Mr Dyson, Head of Sixth Form
